History
New York City has always been a major gateway for the United States, through which countless men and women have passed on their way to evangelize Nigeria, South Africa, England, Germany, Russia, and other places. The problem is, everyone was so busy passing through, that very little evangelism was undertaken in the city of New York itself! Work has been going on in Brooklyn for three decades and Spanish congregations are thriving in several places in the five boroughs, but only recently has an effort been made to establish an English-speaking congregation in Manhattan.
This effort was started by Sewell Hall of the Embry Hills church of Atlanta, a man vitally interested in worldwide evangelism. He knew of a couple living in Atlanta, who was planning to move after nine years of ministry there. Sewell convinced Tom and Susan Beeler to undertake the challenge of starting a congregation in New York City. Tom and Susan moved to New York in August of 1998 with the help of 12 churches, countless Christians and the encouragement of their families.
A place was found to meet near Columbia University, and 13 people attended the first worship service of the newly formed Amsterdam Ave. Church of Christ. On that first day Hector and Vilia Rios became the first members of the new congregation along with Tom and Susan. "Permanent visitors/helpers" included Miguel Rosario and Brent Shedd who are members at other congregations.
In our first year, membership doubled. The second year, membership doubled again and we changed our name to the Upper West Side Manhattan Church of Christ. We also changed our time of worship, from an afternoon service to a morning one. We currently meet from 10:00 AM until 12:30 PM every first day of the week (Sundays).
Come and be a part of this exciting work in our nation's largest city! We welcome everyone who wants to worship God in His way as He has commanded us in the Holy Scriptures. The fields are ripe unto harvest in New York City.
